Penguins beat Islanders 4-2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period to lead defending champion Pittsburgh.

Patric Hornqvist, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel also scored — each getting his third of the season — to help the Penguins win for the third time in four games and improve to 5-0-1 at home.

Crosby, playing for the second straight game after missing the first six with a concussion, scored with 2:25 left as he caught a pass from Scott Wilson at the top of the crease and quickly turned to his forehand to put the puck behind Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak. Kessel added a power-play goal to cap the scoring 32 seconds later.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 35 shots while starting for the eighth straight game.

Travis Hamonic and Shane Prince scored for the Islanders, and Halak finished with 31 saves.

Islanders head to Pittsburgh to face Penguins

PITTSBURGH – The Islandersare looking to bounce back from a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday when they face the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Center on Thursday night.

Sidney Crosby returned to action on Tuesday night for the Penguins in a 3-2 win against the Florida Panthers. The Penguins' captain didn't miss a beat, scoring in his return to the lineup.

Crosby was the league's third-leading scorer last season, with 85 points (36G, 49A) in 80 games. In Crosby's absence, Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cullen lead the Penguins with six points apiece.

Defenseman Kris Letang (upper-body) will not play tonight against the Islanders, but is getting closer. Marc-Andre Fleury will play in his eighth-straight game to open the season.

The Islanders are playing the Pens on the backend of back-to-back contests, having dropped a 3-2 contest last night to Montreal at home.

Jaroslav Halak will get the start in goal for the Islanders tonight.

Habs beat Isles 3-2

NEW YORK (AP) — Shea Weber scored a power-play goal with 2:57 remaining to lift the Montreal Canadiens to their fifth straight victory, 3-2 over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.

With the Islanders' Nick Leddy off for slashing, Weber fired a shot from the point. It was just the second power-play goal in 23 opportunities given up by New York's league-leading penalty-killing unit.

Paul Byron and Phillip Danault also scored to help Montreal improve to 6-0-1 and remain the only team in the NHL without a regulation loss.

Al Montoya, who played for the Islanders from 2010-12, stopped 26 shots in his first start since Oct. 18. The Canadiens beat New York for the seventh straight time.

John Tavares and Dennis Seidenberg scored for New York.

Islanders face Canadiens at Barclay's Center

The New York Islanders (3-3-0) the Montreal Canadiens (5-0-1) on Wednesday night at the Barclays Center.

Thomas Greiss will start in goal for the Islanders on Wednesday and the defense corps will stay the same, according to head coach Jack Capuano. The forward lines hinge on whether or not Nikolay Kulemin will be ready to go for the Islanders.

The Canadiens have an NHL-best 11 points, the only team without a regulation loss and lead the league in goals for (3.83) and goals against per game (1.50).

Former-Islander Al Montoya starts in between the pipes for the Canadiens on Wednesday night. Montoya has gone 2-0-1 with a 1.30 goals-against average, a .962 save percentage and one shutout. Montoya is 3-0-0 against the Islanders in his career.

Bernier Agrees To One-Year Deal

The New York Islanders announced today that Steve Bernier has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) deal.

Bernier, 31, scored six points (one goal, five assists) in 24 games with the Islanders last season. He also appeared in six Stanley Cup Playoff games as the Islanders advanced to the second round.

In 2014-15, Bernier tied his career high with 32 points (16 goals, 16 assists) in 67 games during his fourth year with the New Jersey Devils. The 30 year-old from Quebec City played in all 24 games during New Jersey's run to the 2012 Stanley Cup Final.

In 633 career NHL games with the Islanders, Devils, Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks, Bernier has registered 230 points (105 goals, 125 assists). Bernier has 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists) in 74 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Islanders, Devils, Canucks and Sharks.

Bernier has appeared in 85 career American Hockey League games with the Albany Devils, Worcester Sharks and Cleveland Barons, totaling 61 points (27 goals, 34 assists). The Sharks originally drafted Bernier in the first round, 16th overall at the 2003 NHL Draft.

Before playing professionally, Bernier scored 313 points (151 goals, 162 assists) in 271 games during four seasons with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Wildcats selected Bernier with the first overall pick at the 2001 QMJHL Entry Draft. The league named Bernier to its Second All-Star Team in 2003 and 2004 and to its All-Rookie Team in 2002.

Internationally, Bernier won a Gold Medal with Team Canada at the 2003 IIHF World U18 Championship in Russia. During the tournament, Bernier finished second on his team in scoring with eight points (four goals, four assists) in seven games

Sharks beat Islanders 3-2

NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Pavelski scored with 2:11 left to lift the Sharks to a victory over the Islanders.

Melker Karlsson and Tomas Hertl also scored to help the Sharks win for the third time in four games. Joe Thornton and Brent Burns had two assists each, giving both five on the season. Aaron Dell stopped 21 shots to win his NHL debut.

On the tiebreaking goal, Thornton sent a pass into the slot and Pavelski deflected it in. It gave Pavelski his fifth point in two games after he had a goal and three assists in the Sharks' 7-4 loss to the New York Rangers on Monday.

The Islanders trailed 1-0 after getting outplayed in the first period, but picked it up in the second and took the lead with two goals 2:10 apart in the middle of the period.

Isles beat Ducks 3-2

NEW YORK (AP) — Josh Bailey scored 54 seconds into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in their home opener Sunday night.

Brock Nelson and John Tavares scored for the Islanders and Jaroslav Halak stopped 24 shots to get New York its first win of the season after opening with two road losses.

Cam Fowler and Ryan Getzlaf scored in the third period for the Ducks and John Gibson finished with 27 saves. Anaheim fell to 0-2-1 on its season-opening five-game trip.

The Ducks trailed 2-0 in the third before rallying to tie it.
