Jaroslav Halak placed on waivers by Islanders

Goaltender Jaroslav Halak was placed on waivers by the New York Islanders on Friday.

Halak was pulled in the second period of the Islanders' 6-4 loss at the Minnesota Wild on Thursday after allowing four goals on 24 shots, including three goals in a span of 1:20 in the second.

"Jaro wasn't sharp at all," coach Jack Capuano said Thursday. "He gave up some soft goals and we had to battle back. We did against a real good team. We needed a better effort from Jaro, quite honestly. … Four goals on 24 shots isn't going to get it done."

If Halak goes unclaimed the Islanders will have the option of sending him to Bridgeport of the American Hockey League after 12 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Islanders have goaltenders Thomas Greiss and Jean-Francois Berube on the roster. Berube relieved Halak against the Wild on Thursday.

Halak, 31, is 6-8-5 with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in 21 games. He has a career record of 206-123-42 with a 2.42 GAA and a .916 save percentage in 388 games with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals and the Islanders.

New York acquired him from Washington in a trade May 1, 2014 and signed him to a four-year, $18 million contract May 22, 2014, that runs through the 2017-18 season.

Rasmus Ristolainen scores in OT, Sabres beat Islanders 3-2

game, Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, in Buffalo,
N.Y.(Jeffrey T. Barnes/Associated Press)

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Rasmus Ristolainen has just two goals this season. Both have been game-winners for the Buffalo Sabres.

The defenseman scored 42 seconds into overtime to give the Sabres a 3-2 comeback victory over the New York Islanders on Friday night.

"I love to play overtime," said Ristolainen, who also scored in the extra period in Buffalo's 4-3 victory over Edmonton on Dec. 6.

Johan Larsson and Matt Moulson scored in regulation, and Ristolainen had his team-leading 19th assist to help the Sabres win their second straight game. Robin Lehner made 33 saves.

"We battled at the end and we found a way to win," Ristolainen said. "We never give up and we're having fun and we trust each other."

Ryan Strome and Alan Quine scored for New York, and Jean-Francois Berube made 34 saves in his first start of the season.

The Islanders have lost four in a row. They have had a lead or been tied entering the third period of each game.

"We play a good 40 minutes and the third period we kind of seem flat," Strome said. "It's kind of been the downfall of our team this year, our third periods and finding ways to win."

Ristolainen scored the winner on an odd-man rush, receiving a pass from Kyle Okposo in the slot and sending a wrist shot over Berube's glove.

Ristolainen is the fourth Sabres' defenseman to score two overtime winners in his career.

"It's good to get points from guys back there, and he's got a lot of poise," Okposo said. "He makes plays and he creates offense, and you need that. He's our No. 1 D-man for a reason."

Okposo, the Buffalo points leader, was playing against his former team for the first time.

"It was strange, to be honest with you," Okposo said. "So many times you play with those guys. I know exactly what they're going to do. It was an odd game, an odd feeling."

Moulson tied it at 2 for Buffalo on a power play 3:19 into the third period. Berube could not control the rebound from Evander Kane's long shot, and Moulson's backhand bounced in off the skate of Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey.

"That's kind of how things have been going for us lately," Price said. "It's frustrating. We're playing well, can't seem to get the bounces in the third and overtime."

Islanders coach Jack Capuano was pleased with his team's effort on the second night of a back-to-back, but said taking two penalties in the third period killed New York's momentum.

"It's frustrating to me that the guys worked this hard and they can't get the win," Capuano said. "I was just hoping we could stay disciplined in the third period, and we didn't."

The Islanders showed little fatigue from playing in Chicago on Thursday night, generating several early scoring chances against a Sabres team that was off for two days.

New York had a 16-7 advantage in shots on goal in the first period and took a 1-0 on Strome's straightaway wrist shot with 6:52 remaining.

The Sabres showed more urgency in the second and tied it 2:32 into the period when Larsson re-directed Rasmus Ristolainen's shot from the point past Berube.

Quine scored on a power play to put the Islanders back in front 2-1 at 6:39 of the second period. Shane Prince slid a pass across the crease to Quine for the one-timer.

Both teams' stars were shaken up during the game.

Concussion spotters pulled Jack Eichel from the game after he was shoved head-first into the boars by New York's Johnny Boychuck late in the third period. Eichel took part in the ensuing power play before going to the dressing room. He returned before the end of the third period.

Islanders captain John Tavares also left briefly in the second period after getting hit in the leg but was able to return.

NOTES: Sabres D Zach Bogosian (knee) sat out his 20th straight game. Bogosian and D Tyler Fedun (upper body) both skated Friday morning and one of them will enter the lineup on Buffalo's upcoming two-game road trip, coach Dan Bylsma said. Fedun has missed five games. . Islanders F Casey Cizikas (upper body) did not play after getting injured Thursday night. ... Ristolainen has a point in five straight games, the longest streak of his career.

Letang scores in OT, Penguins bounce back vs Islanders

By JAKE SEINER
AP Sports Writer

NEW YORK (AP) Sidney Crosby created time and space in overtime, and that was all the defending Stanley Cup champions needed to cap a bounce-back victory.

Crosby faked a slap shot and deked around a defender to set up Kris Letang's goal 1:24 into OT,
helping the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 3-2 to rebound from a blowout loss.

Crosby sidestepped Brock Nelson at the right point and inched closer to the net before dishing to Letang, who swooped around the cage and one-timed it from the left side.

"It's an elite play by an elite player," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said.

Pittsburgh lost 7-1 to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night, its biggest defeat during Sullivan's nearly yearlong tenure.

"I think all of us want to have a response after we're all disappointed in one another," Sullivan said. "So, we knew that's not our identity and that's not this team."

Matt Murray had 20 saves for the Penguins, who have won eight of 11 and can tie the New York Rangers atop the Metropolitan Division by beating Buffalo on Saturday night.

The last-place Islanders dropped their fourth straight and are mired in a 1-3-4 stretch. Jaroslav Halak withstood a barrage of chances in the third period and stopped 32 shots while making his seventh straight start.

"We took a good team to overtime," New York coach Jack Capuano said. "Unfortunately for our guys, it's just one of those things - 3 on 3.

"There's no moral victories in this game," he added. "We played a tough opponent and they played well."

Capuano shuffled his lines to get Ryan Strome with first-unit center John Tavares, but the offense came from elsewhere. Nelson scored on a power play early in the second period, and rookie Anthony Beauvillier got his second goal 42 seconds later.

The Penguins had lost two of three and hobbled into New York with health concerns. Patric Hornqvist has a concussion and did not play, Chris Kunitz was a game-time decision with a lower-body injury and Murray left the loss to the Capitals after being hit in the head in the first period.

Kunitz played and assumed Hornqvist's role as net-front pest on the Penguins' power play, helping Pittsburgh score first during a dominant opening period. With Nelson in the box for charging, Kunitz fed the puck to Letang, then skated toward the slot while Letang shot from the right point. The rebound skipped to Crosby alone below the right faceoff dot, and with Halak still searching for the puck, Crosby one-timed it in from an odd angle.

Pittsburgh outshot New York 16-5 in the first period, but then the defending Stanley Cup champs got sloppy.

Evgeni Malkin was called for roughing after the end of the first period, and New York scored on the power play early in the second. Nelson controlled a nice pass from Strome before firing from atop the faceoff circles, beating Murray for his fifth goal 1:51 in.

Beauvillier then gave New York the lead after Letang turned the puck over near his own blue line. Beauvillier scooped up the defenseman's gift, skated in alone and went around Murray forehand-to-backhand.

"We let up a little bit there and they got some momentum off that power-play goal," Crosby said. "But I thought we handled it well."

After an uneasy 10 minutes for Pittsburgh, Malkin forced a turnover that led to the tying goal. The puck ended up behind New York's net, and Phil Kessel flicked it back toward center ice amid a scrum. An undefended Trevor Daley one-timed it past Halak with 6:05 left in the second.

The Penguins haven't lost consecutive games in regulation in nearly a year. Pittsburgh lost its first four games - all in three periods - under Sullivan last December, but since then, they're 12-0-1 following a regulation defeat.

NOTES: Hornqvist is day to day and did not skate Friday morning. ... Islanders D Dennis Seidenberg has been out since a puck hit him in the jaw Saturday at Florida. He skated Friday while wearing a face guard, but is not close to returning. Capuano said Seidenberg is still having trouble eating. ... Isles D Ryan Pulock, out four to six weeks with a lower-body injury, also skated Friday morning but did not play.

Islanders select Kieffer Bellows 19th overall in 2016 NHL Draft

BUFFALO, NY – The New York Islanders on Friday at the 2016 NHL Draft selected Keiffer Bellows with the 19th overall pick in the draft.

The native of Edina, Minnesota posted 50 goals and 31 assists for 81 points and 101 penalty minutes in 62 games with the USA Under-18 team in 2015-16.

Rating the Isles (2015-16): Josh Bailey

Josh Bailey didn't have his best NHL season in 2015-16, as he only posted 12 goals and 20 assists in 81 games played.

Along with that, Bailey had a minus-7 rating, 105 shots on goal, 1284 TOI, 15:51 ATOI and 22 penalty minutes.

Although Bailey had an average season in 2015-16, he did manage to go on a few hot streaks here and there, which boosted his final season grade from us. He is most likely a player the Islanders want to keep this offseason.

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Rating the Isles (2015-16): Matt Martin

Matt Martin may not seem like a goal scorer for the Islanders, only posting 10 goals and nine assists in the 2015-16 regular season.

But Martin can be seen as an intangible player, meaning in this case he can be more useful in other categories other than the goals and assists categories.

Martin led the Islanders in hits in 2015-16 with 365. Cal Clutterbuck was second with 288, no where near Martin.

Martin is definitely an defensive outlet for the Islanders. Not only is his defensive play outstanding, but his ability to get his team going is incredible.

Islanders 2016-17 regular season home opener announced

The NHL on Monday released the 2016-17 regular season home openers for all 30 teams.

The full schedule will be released tomorrow.

Friday, June 10, 2016

Rating the Isles (2015-16): Kyle Okposo

Kyle Okposo had one of his best NHL seasons in 2015-16, posting 22 goals and 42 assists for 64 points.

His season-best for goals and assists was in 2013-14, where he posted 27 goals and 42 assists for 69 points.

But Okposo still had a good season this year too, as he was a key player in the Islanders lineup almost every game.

FINAL GRADE: B+

Rating the Isles (2015-16): John Tavares

John Tavares has proved himself worthy of the Islanders' captaincy. He had 33 goals and 37 assists in this past regular season for a total of 70 points, almost matching some of his best NHL seasons.

He also had six goals and five assists for 11 points in the playoffs this season, which in our opinion is his best post-season yet.

Tavares even had the series-winning overtime goal in Game 6 of the 2016 round one playoff series against the Florida Panthers on April 24, sending the Islanders to the second round, where they would lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tavares almost reached the milestone of his best NHL season of his career, which is why we're not giving him the highest grade possible. But still, the first overall pick by the Islanders in the 2009 NHL Draft still has plenty of potential, and we feel that Tavares has plenty of playing time left and has some great playing time ahead of him.

Rating the Isles (2015-16): Thomas Greiss

"Long Island Faceoff" Staff Report
2015-16 was one of the Islanders' best seasons in their recent history.

They made it past the first round of the playoffs since 1993.

What player is mainly to thank for such an achivement?

How about goaltender Thomas Greiss?

After spending 2014-15 in Pittsburgh, Greiss came to the Islanders not being expected to do too much.

But with injuries to Islanders starting goaltender Jaroslav Halak, Greiss earned some extensive playing time.

In that playing time in the regular season, he posted a career-best save percentage of .925, a career-best record of 23-11-4, a career-best 1107 saves, all in 41 games played, the most in any season in his career.

One could argue however that Greiss played in many more games this season than any other season, which is why his stats are so much better this season than any of his six other seasons in the NHL.

But we here at "Long Island Faceoff" feel that Greiss worked hard to earn those numbers for this season, and that is why we give him a very impressive final - season grade.

We're giving Greiss the grade we're giving him because of the fact that he played in half of the Islanders games this season and put up stellar numbers. Had he played more and ept up his great goaltending, we definitely would have given him an A+ for sure.
